Getting there from Thodupuzha
Thommankuthu is about 18 km from Thodupuzha and is reached through the ecotourism centre at the foot of the falls. Buses, taxis and private vehicles all run to the centre, and the trail starts from there.
The seven steps
The falls are known as a seven step waterfall: the water comes down in a series of drops rather than a single fall, with pools between them. The wider series runs to twelve falls spread over roughly five kilometres of the stream.
Walking and trekking
It is a walk of two to three kilometres from the entrance to the main fall. A longer trail of about twelve kilometres continues deeper into the forest and is done with a local guide, since the upper reaches sit inside the reserve and need forest department permission.
When the falls are running
The falls carry most water after the monsoon and the months from September to March are the usual season for the trek. Flow drops through the dry months, and the rock stays slippery whatever the season.
